To complement the tour visitors are provided
with an opportunity to
experience some of Grenada's traditional culture - African
drumming and dancing, stick fighting, traditional games - handed
down to us by our ancestors.
Visitors are encouraged to join in the fun by participating in any the
following:.
The Pique: a sensual and flirtatious dance of
courtship.
Pound Stone: usually played when the moon is full, this
game can be played with any number of person and the game piece is a smooth
rounded stone. Players may sit or kneel to form a circle. The stone is placed
in a players hand and is passed from player to player in a clockwise direction
to the beat of an African song and or beat of the drum. The objective is to
pass the stone without dropping it or breaking the rhythm of the sons or
drums whoever breaks the rhythm leaves the circle and the game continues until
two persons remains and one loses.
Stick Fighting : (Kalinda) A dance of war, this African
cultural game of ritual war strategy was practiced secretly during slavery and
was often used to test the skill of a young warrior. While today's version is
much milder than that practiced by the slave the art and skill displayed is as
interesting .
